Busy Weekend with Clyde

What a busy weekend! Clyde must have had tons of extra energy. Clementine always gets to go out but he got his chance.

The Justice League of Street Food of 2011 started out with a big bang. The new location was at the TAXI District, just 2 miles out of downtown Denver.
This year, we had more room for customers and a live DJ. We estimated that about 6,000 people came out and joined the party.

Food was the star and people seemed so happy to get their tacos, cheeseburgers, pizza and of course, cupcakes with Clyde.

We hope everyone had so much fun and looking forward to the next Justice League party.

City Park Jazz had their first concert last Sunday. We had an awesome time. Cupcakes, jazz, summertime in Denver, what maore do you want?

This Tuesday was the first Civic Center Eats. From 11-2PM, every Tuesday, you can come down and get your favorite street food and have a litle fun during the day for the great summer months.

Hey Clementine Fans,

Can you believe that it is already JUNE?? Summertime in Colorado has plenty of summer activities, from swimming, hiking for having a picnic.

Well, Clementine wants to join in the party. The first JUSTICE LEAGUE is set for JUNE 4th (This Saturday). Stay tuned for an announcement of the location spot.

Who doesn't love music? Clementine does so she will be at City Park Jazz starting JUNE 5th (This Sunday), starting at 3:30PM. Come on by and party with us every Sunday at City Park.

Also, Civic Center Eats starts JUNE 7th. Join us and your favorite food vendors and spread some sunshine.

Clementine and Clyde are getting out!!

Dear cupcake fanatics,

It seems like Denver is getting warmer despite some cold days. We are beginning the wedding and graduation times.

Clementine decided to let Clyde come out and reconnect with our fans. Clementine doesn't really like cold or snow so she lets Clyde get out then.

Soon it will be summer and Clementine and Clyde can go play at the park for some sunshine, fans, jazz and fun.

Our bakers love cupcakes, little or big cupcakes. Some bigger cupcakes are showcased with more to decorate and love.

Cupcake Trucks on Hold With Winter Weather

Hello fans!

We've been anxious to get back to the streets of Denver, but it seems Mother Nature has put a damper on the cupcake fun!

With temps below freezing this week, we will keep the trucks housed until we see the mercury hit at least 40.

Not to worry fans! While we are stalled in the garage, our shop is buzzing with cupcake trickery. We've been busy concocting some new flavors and ideas. Keep an eye out, you might just see some new creations on a street near you! When warmer weather aproaches, of course!

Till then, enjoy this cold and wintry weather. Take a break and head to the hills! Skiing is awesome right now.

We cannot thank our fans and supporters enough! Thanks to your voices, letters and continued efforts, we left the Denver City Council meeting today regarding Denver Food Trucks feeling pretty positive. Thanks to everyone involved, we are now gaining clarity regarding current rules and regulations.

After being parked for a month, it's safe to say Clementine will be hitting the streets again on 2/1/11.

Thank you again for all your phenomenal support!

Denver Zoning strikes The Denver Cupcake Truck

Hello Denver Cupcake Truck Fans!

As many of you noticed, we posted on Facebook yesterday a mention of having recently encountered issues with Denver Zoning regarding where we can and cannot be/park. It is our goal to resolve and better understand Zoning regulations by months end. Don’t be alarmed, The Denver Cupcake Truck isn’t going away or closing up! We love the streets of Denver and only want to learn how we can be on them without “breakin’ the law”!

By spring time we will be in full swing. For now we will be at private and public events that we are formally invited to be at. Keep an eye on our Facebook updates as we have a few public events lined up in January.

A little history on our plan and process for The Denver Cupcake Truck
In April 2010, we decided to create this amazing truck to drive around town and make random, spontaneous and surprise stops. We never set out to have the truck park in one spot and not move. The Denver Cupcake Truck belongs to Cake Crumbs Bakery; if we wanted another location we would have opened another bakery. We wanted a roaming truck to spread cheer and cupcakes throughout the city, not to a single location. When we went to get the truck licensed we were told by Denver Excise and License that we needed an inspection by Denver Environmental Health and Safety. Once we passed their inspection, we were good to go. According to Denver Excise and License we were free to park anywhere in town as long as it was legal and at least 200 feet from a competing business, didn’t impede pedestrian or street traffic. Super, we were on our way to having a great season while selling cupcakes throughout Denver.

Surprisingly, In November and December 2010 we were hassled over and over by Zoning and Code Enforcers, learning we were not allowed to carry on as we had all spring and summer. After questioning the city employees that approached the truck who made threats of tickets and “mandatory” court, the answers we got were vague, gray and sometimes unavailable.

Here are a few facts we have been told by Denver Inspectors and Zoning:

1. We are not allowed to park at a meter.
2. We are not allowed to park at a bagged meter for a special event.
3. We are not allowed to park in a buildings valet, private parking lot or loading dock without a zoning permit for the specific location, despite a personal invitation from the building owner or manager.
4. We cannot drive around town and make spontaneous stops, much like an Ice Cream Truck.
5. According to Denver Zoning, we must obtain an annual permit at a location first inspected and then approved by Zoning. The permit would allow us to park at that location 7 days a week for a single 4-hour time allotment. The permit would cost $50.00 per year, the location would belong to us and only us, zoning would not allow another truck a permit for that same location. Zoning wasn’t sure if the permit could be shared by other trucks if we didn’t want that location 7 days a week.
6. Zoning did say it was possible that we could have more than one location per year.
7. Zoning didn’t have any answers regarding private events or prepaid parties. Currently we are unclear if we can even park in front of a building or house if the occupant pays for our cupcakes and services.
8. According to our last encounter with Zoning, we should have never received our license without their signoff. Meanwhile our signoff checklist from Excise and License only indicated we needed a signoff from Environmental Health and Safety.

As you can see, it’s been a frustrating string of answers and in fact unclear and very vague. Just who is in charge over at the city building? Why weren’t we informed by Excise and License of our obligations, how were we able to get the license? We need some solid answers! For that reason, we are setting off to get informed and possibly encourage some change. The modern food truck movement that has swept across America and into Denver needs to be mobile, not stationary!

With such a huge success this past year as a result of our truck setting sail, it would be a shame to see Denver lose a great source of revenue. Not only did our sales exceed our expectations and projections on the truck but the truck drove 40% more business to the bakery. It was a win-win situation for us, for Denver, for our neighborhood and fans. Denver would be lucky to have more tax revenue created by the mobile food rebirth.
To our fellow restaurant owners, bakery owners and other food establishment owners, it is not and never will be our intention to park The Denver Cupcake Truck outside your establishments to compromise your business. The Denver Cupcake Truck seeks business in peace with a creative twist.

With that said friends, we sign off. If you can find time to reach out to your local City Council Representatives or the mayor, please do. Together we can make Denver a hot spot for the modern mobile food movement.

Clementine Flips Her Lid!

No, seriously...she literally flipped her lid.

Earlier today, Clementine was driving back from Civic Center Eats; the Cupcake Guy and Clem were arguing over what song to play, and as usual, the Cupcake Guy won. Clementine can be a bit of a brat when it comes to music and everyone knows it. As we approached a stop light, she thought it would be funny to randomly release her "welcome window" door to make a point that she was in control. HOWEVER, not seeing that Clementine had done this, the Cupcake Guy started driving away and the raised window slammed into another truck and totally demolished it's driver's side door frame and window. Clementine's window was ripped clean off the frame and fell to the street where it morphed into a new shape, which wasn't pretty. Everyone was fine and no one was even slightly injured...except Clementine and the other Truck. New rule! From now on, Clementine gets to listen to whatever music she wants to. That was completely uncalled for and to be honest, a little ridiculous. Now I know not to cross this little lady! If I want to listen to The Cranberries but she wants to listen to Taylor Swift, well then by golly I am going Country. So if you see one of us driving down the street and our music is questionable, just know that it probably isn't by our choice. Not that we want to condone bad behavior, but we are now using this opportunity to give Clementine a face lift and get some new parts and paint! Oh, what a day...

So, earlier today I was doing some work at the office when I heard some chatter and giggling coming from the garage. I knew the trucks were supposed to be taking a nap so I was a little curious as to who it might be. I walked into the room where Clementine and Clyde play and sleep, and as I got closer to them, I heard a big "Shhhh, he's coming!" from around the corner. I WOULD have paid them no attention and continued on, except for the fact that they were parked closer together then I usually have them. I knew something was up and said, "You can stop faking it, I know you two aren't sleeping." It turns out Clementine has a bit of a crush on Clyde and she wanted to hold hands. They were flirting like crazy, but I put a quick stop to that!! The last thing we need is a bunch of tiny Ford Fiestas running around the shop because these two couldn't control themselves in the dark. Oh, the joys of being the owner of magical trucks.

Life in the Denver Cupcake Truck

Things have been pretty busy here on the truck and in our bakery recently. Today we were at Civic Center Park for Civic Center EATS - we had a blast! We sold out by 2pm! As of right now this event will end at the end of August, but we are currently trying to get it extended through September - we'll see what might happen!

So what's happening over the next few days? Tomorrow we are at a market on 15th and California @ Tiri's Garden along with several other Food Trucks - so if you are in the neighborhood come by for LUNCH!!! This market runs from 11-2pm although Clementine won't be there until about 12 noon. The rest of the week we will be all over the city with many other stops planned!

As for this weekend we have a NEW Event that we have helped put together called the "Justice League of Street Food". We have put together our first party and is scheduled for August 21st. Location....well that will be anounced later. We will have a hugh gathering of food trucks, games, music, films, beer and wine. Why should you go? It's going to be an AWESOME time to share with friends. The party starts at 6pm, so be ready for some food, fun and a happy times!

Things can get a little heated on the truck, apparently a Zippy Lemon wanted to rule so the Zippy Lemon threw the head Vanilla Party cupcake overboard. When the Cupcake Guy arrived on the scene, there was nothing he could do. This did mark a sad day on the truck...but life goes on in the world of cupcake truck driving.

A Family Affair

For many of my fans this comes of no surprise, this cupcake truck is a family affair. Since our children were 2 and 4 we've been in the baking business, they've watched the bakery, Cake Crumbs grow as fast as they grew. As a parent of 2 boys, what fun it is to drive a crazy old truck around, give it a cute name and sell an American classic sweet from and get to claim this was our dream. Our boys love the truck and are just as excited as the next when they spot me around town. It's a fun game for them too, when their mom, co-owner Denon and my wife has the time to chase the truck they go crazy. Sometimes the giggles don't stop. Here's a glimpse of what the truck is like for the two most precious boys in my life.

Reunited at Civic Center Eats

Wow!! Not only did we have a beautiful day for Civic Center Eats, but we had a beautiful reunion too. After heated debate and dilemma, 528 degrees Wood Fired Pizza and The Denver Biscuit Bus were able to park and sell today at the park. It was a pleasure to be in their company again, a great sight to see. More power to the mobile food in Denver, that's all I have to say.

Oh....I forgot to mention, we had a great day and saw many new faces and SMILES too!

Civic Center Eats is TOMORROW

Clementine has been very busy over the last couple of weeks. We had a great time at the City Park Jazz as well we really enjoyed spending some time at Civic Center EATS last Tuesday with all the other food trucks and carts. Civic Center EATS will be every Tuesday from 11 - 2pm through August 31st!! We hope to see more and more people there each week (tell your friends)!!! Clementine is still getting some work done over the next couple of weeks, keep your eyes open!
Besides the busy daily runs, Clementine has been busy with private parties. They have been everything from Birthday, Anniversaries, Company parties, and a Wedding. It has been so much fun. Well the old retro truck loves her new name "Clemintine"!! She drives down the street and hears FANS shouting "Clemintine, Clemintine". We totally believe in spreading happiness and joy throughout DENVER!! Over the next few weeks you will see some changes with Clemintine, she will be getting a new electrical system that will power some new lighting as well we are working on keeping her cool with an A/C unit. Hi Denver Cupcake Truck Fans!! We've got a winner for the truck name, Clementine. Vanessa L. a Facebook loyal has named our old truck and we happen to think it's pretty cute, fits the old truck well.

So... a lot of press lately. We can't thank you all enough for the great support and word of mouth. With fans like you our story has gotten to the press like wild fire. Thanks for making us a Denver icon.

Where should we go today? I have posted my thought of Denver Health but am looking for more ideas. Let me know via Facebook, we love taking requests. Keeping in mind they have to be in the within the city of Denver.

Spring is Here

Now that Spring is here, The Denver Cupcake Truck and The Cupcake Guy have become very busy with Daily stops, Fairs and Private Parties. We are not only busy with these things, we are also busy with the Press and Photo shoots. For the last 4 weeks we've been going none stop - it has been totally fun and exciting. Hi Denver!!

So...looks like rain for Wednesday, May 12th. That's not going to stop the Cupcake Guy. I am kind of like an invincible super hero in the rain!

I plan to be at 18th and Curtis, it's been a popular stop request. To be honest, it was an awesome stop that last time I was down there.

The cupcakes will be safe from the rain, you'll see. Can't wait to see your smile tomorrow!! With the cooperation of the weather I hope to park around 10am or so!

Cupcakes for the Cure at Anshutz Med. Center on Thursday, May 6th

We continue on the road of fundraising for Susan G. Komen and thought one of the best stops in Denver would be the Medical Campus out at Anshutz/Fitzsimmons. We will be on a limited schedule due to a private event in Boulder later in the day. If the demand is high, the Cupcake Guy will return on Friday too.

Our first stop on campus will be near Children's Hospital close to emergency parking, our second stop will be near building 500 in the Ignacio lot. We've heard from many fans, I hope to have enough cupcakes to satisfy all. I will be packing some gluten free.

We had a great first day on the truck and at the bakery in support of The Cupcakes for the Cure week to benefit the Denver Chapter of Susan G. Komen. Despite a flat tire and the need to replace two of the vintage white walls, we sold a great bunch of cupcakes today. Sorry to leave some of you high and dry in Capitol Hill, I was hoping to be there longer until a great customer pointed out that one of my tires had a very loud hiss. Not exactly the conversation starter I was hoping for, but better there then on the road. So....I took the old truck in and it's in great shape and ready to roll tomorrow.

Our first stop will be at the Susan G. Komen office here in Denver, near PSL and Saint Josephs Hospitals at the intersection by Franklin and 17th.

As always I will park and post.

Anyone wondering the Mystery Flavor/Flavor of the day (FOD)? We don't really have one this week. We are baking up some delicious Strawberry all week in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. So...no mystery this week. We will be back to the FOD next week and you will all be very excited about what we have in store for you.

Truck struck with a flat tire...lose an afternoon

Hey all, our truck was hit wit a flat tire and will be going into the shop for a quick repair. We have plenty of cupcakes that are still available. You can find them at our shop at 2216 Kearney Street in the Park Hill neighborhood. We are going to donate $.50 from each cupcake truck cupcake sale at the shop to the Susan G. Komen fund.

Ok - Giving The Denver Cupcake Truck a little brake is a good thing - We were very busy last week. This week we will be busier though with Cupcakes for the Cure supporting the Denver Chapter of Susan G Komen. We are going to start our week at Rose Medical Center and Denver Health. We should be at Rose from 10am -11:30, so look for the update on the exact location. If you can't stop by the truck stop in the bakery to support the cause.

The Cupcake Guy had a busy day with all our FANS. He started his day at about 4am by helping open Cake Crumbs Bakery and preparing YUMMY Fresh Cupcakes for the truck. Then he started an interview with NPR who is doing a story on Technology so.... why not use The Denver Cupcake Truck? Jeff the reported was amazed at how The Cupcake Guy worked his day using technology on the old Retro Cupcake Truck. He was also fascinated by the Love of The Denver Cupcake Truck and it's wonderful cupcakes. So he rode along with the Cupcake Guy getting all types of sounds and interviewing customers on how this ideas works. After several hours of being on location in the Highlands neighborhood, the Cupcake Guy dropped off Jeff (NPR Reporter) so he could work on developing what he does best - PUTTING TOGETHER A GREAT STORY. The Cupcake Guy then went of to his next location - 16th & Welton. He was greeted by a group of people but then it became a Crowd. The Cupcake Guy sold out in record time of 25 minutes. Then The Cupcake Guy gathered himself after the big rush and raced across town to take care of some last minute mailings. The clerk at the Post Office saw the Retro Cupcake Truck and started questioning - Are you the Cupcake Guy? You actually sell cupcakes out of that cool truck? When can you park in front of my house? How do I know where you are? The Questions kept rolling out!!! The Cupcake Guy answered everything as fast as possible knowing that he had another appointment with a marketing firm called "Juice Coms". They wanted the Cupcake Guy to present why Social Media / Marketing works. They were fascinated by how this simple idea has such a strong following. After treating the group to fabulous cupcakes - The Cupcake Guy raced his 1969 Ford Vanette again, across town to meet with some friends for Dinner. After dinner and dessert it was a resting time at about 10p.m. - What did The Cupcake Guy learn today? His life was about to get BUSIER.

The last day of the month and what a month it's been. I am lovin' my job as the Cupcake Guy. There's nothin' better than making people smile and serving up one of my favorite treats. I love cupcakes.

So...if you've been watching the truck on Facebook @the denver cupcake truck, you've probably noticed many stop requests. I like to entertain those when I can. Tomorrow will be a day I entertain one of our loyal FB fans before or after my main stop for the day. On the list I plan to be near 18th and Grant Street, thanks to many requests. I will also be near Project Angel Heart headquarters to show our support for the Dining Out For Life event that we are participating in tomorrow and our final stop sometime during the day will be at 4321 Broadway to answer the request of a very loyal fan. Not sure what order those will go in as weather may be a factor tomorrow.

I do have a little surprise for tomorrow as well, not sharing it, you'll have to visit me to see what it is.

Wow! What a great first week out on the streets. I had such a fun time meeting new people and seeing old faces too. First of all thanks to all my fans and followers, you made The Denver Cupcake Trucks first week a huge success. We gained many new followers and sold more cupcakes than we expected.

What was your favorite flavor? I heard rave reviews this week. Looking for more mystery flavor suggestions too. Congratulations to all of you for the correct mystery guesses, hope the t-shirts fit.

I have plenty more prizes to give away next week, keep guessing the mystery flavors.

So...day of rest and them some. The Denver Cupcake Truck will not be making regular stops on Sunday's and Monday's, however we will always book a private party or attend a public event you would like to see the truck at.

Stay tuned and I will share with you my first stop on Tuesday morning. Who wants to guess the mystery flavor for Tuesday?

WOW! Today we were able to put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces. We were able to take the stress of of the gloom of April 15th.
